AYSO depends on volunteers, like you, to officiate games. AYSO referees are not paid.
AYSO is a 100 percent volunteer organization; we all do it for the kids. Each season we need as many referees as coaches if not more. Compared to coaching, refereeing is much less of a time commitment. Without referees, the kids can't play. Many referees start when their children are young and move up with them. AYSO provides the referee training, uniform, and gear to officiate all age groups and levels. Once you become an AYSO Referee, you can choose which games and which level you want to officiate.
See the "Become a Referee Section" to volunteer.

Referees are Critical to the All Star Program
If you are considering having your child participate in the All-Star program after the fall season, then you should become a referee. Each All-Star team must provide a team of 3 qualified referees (1 Center and 2 Assistant Refs).
Regular Season Referee Plan
6U: There will be no referees scheduled. Coaches will act as game monitors.
8U: Every attempt will be made to schedule one referee. For each game, the home team will be assigned referee duties and should provide the referee if the region does not provide one. The referee can be a registered parent volunteer or coach.
10U: Every attempt will be made to schedule one referee and two ARs for each match. In the event that an AR is needed, a parent will be asked to volunteer as a club linesman.
12U: Every attempt will be made to schedule one referee and two ARs for each match. In the event that an AR is needed, a parent will be asked to volunteer as a club linesman.
14U and up: Three referees will be scheduled for each match
